It's been a quick but meaningful semester, and I think we all made great strides in all aspects of our architecture careers. I have a bit of a unique perspective with this being my second semester in Professor Worn's healthcare studio. Last year we really dug into designing a hospital. Learning about the details of such a complex typology was extremely helpful in preparing us for the rigorous process of actually designing a building for a firm. In comparison, this semester was much more flexible in allowing us to explore our own interests while solving a current issue in Chicago in the way we saw most appropriate. In terms of health and well-being, I felt that this semester gave us great insight into the contributing factors outside of the typical medical response. Understanding the importance of community outreach, and actually having a chance to learn from architects and administrators around Chicago was a fantastic opportunity. The variety of conversations we had this semester gave me a feeling of empowerment as an aspiring architect.
Professor Worn expressed to us that this semester is supposed to be a transition from your educational career into your professional career. I truly believe that this semester was successful in making that transition. I think that for future Chicago Studios it is important to remember that as students we are interested in healthcare, but the overall experience of being in Chicago and meeting a huge network of professionals is more important. Professor Worn did a fantastic job this semester introducing us to an eclectic group of professionals including social activists, general contractors, clinicians, typical architects, and many more. These meetings influenced our projects, but more importantly gave us some level of direction into the career path we may want to take.
I also believe that this year's studio took the extra step of beginning to create relationships with the generous designers who offered their time to us. Rather than simply listening to their presentations, asking a couple questions, and moving on, I felt that we all took the opportunity to continue communicating with these professionals. Whether it be meeting at an AIA event, grabbing lunch, chatting on linkedin, or communicating about job opportunities, our group seems to have established relationships that will extend beyond the semester. It's a great feeling knowing that there's such a genuine group of architects out there. Thank you all for sharing your time and knowledge with us, the semester would not have been the same without you.
I'm a huge supporter of the Chicago Studio that UIUC offers. After years and years of learning in a classroom, this opportunity will expand the boundaries of your educational experience. We've been to parts of Chicago that I would have never seen without this program, and we've met professionals that I would have never spoken to without this program. I really hope that UIUC continues to expand the Chicago program. The experience has been invaluable towards my professional development and I hope that that same impact will continue for future students. Lastly, thank you Professor Worn for advising us not only with our classwork but with our professional decisions. The lessons we've learned from you will contribute greatly towards our future.
Best wishes to everyone on their next step!
Alex
