Gensler is one of the biggest architectural firm in the world, we were fortunate enough to have a visit to Gensler’s Chicago office.
Our hosts were Randy Guillot and Michael Schur. Randy Guillot is a principal and the leader of health and wellness department of Gensler. Michael Schur is a young architect in practice and just came to Gensler about half year ago.
Randy gave an overall introduction about Gensler’s work in health and wellness area. He specifically emphasized “health and wellness” instead of “healthcare”, because he thought that we should focus more on keeping people healthy rather than treat them after they get sick. That would be the future of the healthcare industry.
In Gensler, according to Randy Guillot, there are five aspects they care most in terms of health and wellness design:
1. Patients’ experience is your brand;
2. Interdisciplinary care, research and teaching;
3. Think outside of hospital;
4. Technology analysis and simulation;
5. The wellness economy.
Randy talked about that as an international firm, when work internationally, they can always take advantage of having a lot of offices around the world, so that they can have a local point of view and make better decisions with a better understanding of different cultures.
Besides, Gensler also values research seriously. That’s the reason why Michael Schur came to Gensler after having worked in SOM for years. Research, as an important step of evidence based design, receives a grand investment in Gensler. By doing that, Gensler can conduct various researches and use the results they collect to explore the frontier.
