Health is often associated with the socioeconomic conditions of a person. Consequently, the notion of health care is changing from the typical hospital care to community-based health care. A financially self-sustaining campus has been proposed by the Chicago Southwest Development Corporation and designed by HDR Architects. The campus has been designed with some elements that would generate profit, such as retail, arts and recreation etc, to support elements like the hospital. This model can be implemented in other low-income communities across the United States.

HDR was appointed to design a new campus for the Saint Anthony Hospital on 31st and Kedzie in South West Chicago. They conducted a study in collaboration with University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), College of Architecture and the University of Nebraska Medical College of Public Health to understand the needs of the community. They followed the guidelines of evidence-based design for their research. Mixed methods such as interviews, focus groups, and surveys were used. The study not only provided support for the relocation of the Saint Anthony Hospital but also formed a guide for defining the program for the campus.
The campus program includes healthcare and wellness, retail, education, daycare, arts, and recreation elements, which will help them meet the needs of the community. This will strengthen Saint Anthony’s mission of improving community health.
