It was such an excellent experience to have an unusual mid-review last week. We had 20 guests to have lunch with us talking about healthcare in the city, architecture career as well as experience of taking Chicago studio. Then my partner and I had 4 groups of reviews in the afternoon who really gave us tons of comments and suggestions for our project improvement.
Our proposal is to build a decentralized healthcare district for the North Lawndale community. After we looked through the whole community, we found quite a lot underutilized spaces within the community. Shirlo and I decided to make the full use of these spaces thus revitalizing the community as a whole. We selected four spots for our main infrastructures - hospital, ambulatory services, center for innovation and museum, and urban farming; then we put other facilities like vocational school and retail stores along the 16th street where we found a potentiality of becoming a busy and active district; we also connected both North and South Lawndale by designing a permeable public plaza at the boundaries of two communities.
We gained a lot of comments which were very helpful for our project. On comment was mentioned repeatedly by the reviewers, they really liked the Hispanic population demographic that we did via GIS, they wanted to us to have more demographics like that one and layer them up to draw a convincing conclusion to back our proposal.
Some groups of the reviewers also encouraged us to improve our story telling skills, which means to develop a way to convey our ideas in a both professional and attractive way.
Since our proposal focused on the entire community, another comment was to narrow down the scope a little bit to find a specific spot or district that interests us most, and then really dive in to design explicitly as we move on in the next few weeks.
And now we have decided that we are going to create a linear hospital with adjacent facilities on the 16th street. We have seen a lot of great precedents like North Western Memorial Hospital on how they stretch over the streets. We are looking forward to moving on.
