We toured around the Mount Sinai Hospital and the Seigle OP center.
It was very interesting to speak to Mr. Jim Bicak and his colleagues at Mount Sinai Hospitals as they spoke to us about their approach and efforts in improving the community health issues. They told us that they think that the future of healthcare, in their opinion, lies in the development of more outpatient clinics/departments. They also spoke to us about some of the challenges they face. One being infrastructure issues because many of the Sinai Institutes run in old buildings. Another one is that they have a very high “no-show” rate and they are not able to follow up with the patients as they don’t always have cell phones.
They do a lot of work which is outside of typical healthcare such as organizing community events for spreading awareness about health issues, conducting skill development programs to increase the chances of employment and so on. They conduct evidence-based interventions, which includes collecting data by conducting door to door surveys and scientific research, which helps them develop programs for the people of the community. We could relate it this to the findings from our initial site study. We found that this part of Chicago has a very low education, high crime rate, and a low employment rate. We had also discussed the idea of healthcare beyond the hospital in class and this interaction gave us an insight into how those concepts can be implemented.
