Site Visit to Cook County Health & Hospitals System, Central Campus Health Center

After meeting with Mr. Erik Andersen, Principal, Forum Studio in their Chicago Office, we headed with him to the Cook County Health & Hospitals System, Central Campus Health Center in the Illinois Medical District. This project is an in-patient clinic where Cook County and the Cook County Health and Hospital Systems have hired Clayco, Inc., as the developer and design/builder to program. Professor William Worn shared with us that most healthcare projects require expertise from more than two design firms to collaborate on one project. As mentioned on Clayco’s website about the details on this project, the following world class teams have collaborated for this project :

  • Forum Studio – Executive Architect

  • Gensler – Design Architect

  • Brook Architecture, Inc. – Office & Administration Design Architect

  • Christner Inc. – Clinical Programmer

  • Walsh Consulting – Medical Equipment Planner

  • dbHMS – MEOR

  • Uzun & Case – SEOR

  • Terra Engineering – Civil Engineer

  • Site Design – Landscape Architecture

  • Ardmore Associates – QA/QC (Quality Assurance and Quality Control)

  • Trinal, Inc. – Diversity Consultant

We proceeded towards the site and the idea was to start from the top-most floor and descend downward so that we could get a glimpse of the different stages in progression.

  • Fifth Floor : The glass panels were being installed on this floor, as Mr.Erik explained to us about the installation system. They used lifts to install the glass and that the glass detail was custom designed by Gensler with the black frame jutting out, as shown below.

Fourth Floor : On this floor, we saw the steel partitions being installed in order to distinctly indicate the area using the stud wall construction system.

  • Third Floor : This floor also was under installation of steel partitions following the stud wall construction system. The third floor had larger room footprints.

  • Second Floor : We came across two distinctive dry wall corner detail forms, and this detail was factory manufactured which helped them to be efficient in construction. The next two images showcase batt insulation used, followed by internal finishes in the patient rooms.

  • First Floor :  On decending to the first floor, Mr. Erik pointed out towards the lateral bracing that was done for the core.

This has been my first under construction site visit in the United States and I’m glad that I got to visit such a great design proposal in Chicago and learn so much!
