When taking on a project of this scope, it was important to us, my team member and I, to have a strong concept that is accompanied by a narrative. This narrative became the structure of our presentation for this first pin-up review. We were able to convey the many ideas and plans that made up our concept by following this structure. We started with a mission statement that would kick-start the concept to our design. We believe that the words highlighted in our mission statement really bring together all the ideals we envision within this community.
1. Networks
-interconnecting people within the community
-crossing paths to create natural interactions
2. Urban Wellness
-focus on wellness as opposed to sickness
-prevention
3. Resilient Community
-building a community that can take on shocks/stressors and repair itself
We just had our first in-class pin up on Thursday. We have been preparing for the last four weeks and this preparation has included individual research, team research and group concepts. It wasn't until that last two week before the pin-up that we really delved in our teams to come up with how we were to begin this schematic phase of a health campus.
It all started with the analogy of a heart that is connected to its arteries that supply these nodes within our "healthy campus". We began to see our project as a place of wellness, more so a community that fosters wellness. As we introduced this concept we looked into the cities health determinants that are affecting the Lawndale area and what initiatives the city of Chicago are implementing to make small changes that can all together alter to community for the better.
We conducted community analysis where we began to look at the flows of transportation, the neighborhood blocks and how they are connected and disconnected from one another, where and how people have access to wellness, and how the streetscapes can affect community networking and natural interactions.
We stated our strategy and later the results we expected as our outcome. As we focused on making this analogy our design, we were able to create a graphical narrative that takes you along our design process for the beginnings of the schematic phase of our project. Stay posted on how our project evolves over the semester!
