How does a small size architecture firm work? The visit to Vladimir Radutny Architects gives me an answer.
Vladimir Radutny Architects was founded in 2008 by Vladimir Radutny and his partner who left the firm years later. Currently, there are four architects in this firm. The firm is rather compact compared to other companies we visited before in this semester. So how do they make it possible for a small firm like this survives from all those big ones?
Vladimir Radutny told us that at the very beginning, the first few projects were renovation for his parents’ house or other relatives. Each of their employees brought several projects with them to come to this firm. Though the works of the firm are mostly small projects, it gives them chances to focus on every detail to make it perfect. One example is the wall panel of a previous interior design project. It was a wood panel with one side covered with white coating. The tricky part was when those two materials met together. After a couple of samples improvement, they finally got a panel with a decent groove distinguished wood from the coating. Due to the detailed dedication, they rapidly gained a reputation in the architecture industry, and meanwhile won a lot of awards.
So I guess this is the strategy for a small size firm to survive itself among those big ones—start with networking, find its own strength, gain reputation, and branding.
